What Is PDRN, The Anti-Ageing K-Beauty Ingredient Taking Over The Skincare World?

PDRN, the salmon-based ingredient K-beauty fans loveWe hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, HuffPost UK may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI – prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. As a fan of Selling Sunset, I was surprised to see Bre Tiesi invite the cast to enjoy “salmon sperm” injections on the show – I’d never heard of the ingredient in my life. But, unappealing as the Netflix show’s party might sound, there’s real science behind polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN). Yes, the hype K-beauty staple is derived from salmon DNA fragments (but hey, since I became a snail mucin convert back in 2019, I can’t act too far above it).Odd as it may appear at first, some papers say the viral ingredient has tissue-healing and repairing qualities (it was used for wound repair for years).Meanwhile, a 2022 paper writes that it may “promote angiogenesis, cellular activity, collagen synthesis, soft tissue regeneration, and skin priming and revitalisation”.  That same paper, which hailed PDRN as a “promising skin anti-ageing agent,” explained that the ingredient may be linked to angiogenesis (the building of new blood vessels), “cell activity promotion, collagen synthesis, anti-inflammation, hyperpigmentation treatment, soft tissue regeneration, and skin priming and revitalisation”. In short, “PDRN, a potential anti-ageing agent, has numerous effects that are opposite to those of skin ageing”, the article reads. While yes, it’s almost certain that the effects of PDRN are stronger when injected, some dermatologists say certain benefits remain when applied topically. And when paired with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, the ingredient’s potential anti-ageing effects may be bolstered. Perhaps that’s why items like Anua’s PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Moisturising Cream claim to leave your skin “soft, plump and velvety to the touch, while a dewy, luminous glow is revealed”. Experts like dermatologist Dr Mona Gohara have, however, urged some caution. Speaking to TODAY, she said: “There’s real science showing PDRN can stimulate wound healing and collagen production, but most of that data comes from medical use... So it’s promising, but the fountain-of-youth claims are a stretch”. Still, she points out that “It’s almost like giving your skin blueprints to rebuild itself”. Given that some users have shared the “glass skin” effect PDRN has had on their visage, I, for one, will be testing the ingredient for myself.Related...
