And to the families of those two who are no longer with us, I pay my deepest regards and respects from the United States of America. Thank you very much. It’s a very important thing to say. And we mean it.”Trump also mentioned the deadly attack in Australia on Sunday morning as well as the fatal attack on US soldiers in Syria, saying he wanted to “pay his respects to everybody.”On Saturday afternoon, a gunman opened fire in Brown University’s engineering building, killing two people and injuring at least nine others. Police said a person of interest was in custody as of Sunday morning. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were at the White House on Sunday for the White House Christmas reception. After his remarks, the president spoke about those who were in the audience, including his grandkids and professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau. He went on about how great the country is doing right now, claiming America is “leading” in AI, the economy is doing well, and that the 2020 election was “rigged.”Melania Trump briefly spoke before the Christmas reception, saying she was thinking about the families of anyone who was killed in the shooting this weekend. On Saturday night, Trump told reporters the shooting at Brown was a “terrible thing.”“All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those who were very badly hurt it looks like,” he said. “It’s a shame. Just pray.”Vice President JD Vance offered a similar sentiment, writing on social media that he is “thinking of and praying for the victims tonight.”
