Teachers Reveal What They d Actually Love For Christmas

As Christmas nears (and my to-do list becomes longer than Santa’s beard) I recently found myself pondering whether I should be getting my child’s teacher a gift. I’m not entirely sure what the done thing is, but what I do know is that my kid’s teacher is one of her favourite people – and that’s a pretty glowing report given she only started school in September.A Reddit thread on the topic suggests it is fairly common – especially in primary schools where kids have one main teacher and usually a few teaching assistants who support them for the whole year.Someone noted it’s less common in secondary schools “because there’s more teachers and less interaction with parents”.While teachers don’t expect gifts and cards, according to education discount platformDiscounts for Teachers the thought is very much appreciated – 87% say they feel valued when given a gift by a student or parent. Yet despite that appreciation, only 11% always use the presents they receive, meanwhile 29% “rarely” use them and 55% “sometimes” use them. A further 5% say they never use the gifts they receive at all.So, what do teachers want for Christmas? If you do want to get your child’s teacher a little something to say ‘thank you’ for their hard work, there are definitely gifts that are more preferred over others. According to the survey, gift cards are your best bet, with over two-thirds (69%) of teachers saying they’re the most useful present. Some parents chip in together via sites like thankbox and send a gift card to their children’s teacher and any other classroom staff. Some teachers commented that a handmade drawing or painting was their most memorable gift, proof that time and thoughtfulness can leave a lasting impression.Molly Archer, an early years teacher in Hampshire, said: ”The gifts I treasure most from students are the thoughtful ones, like a nice drawing or picture, or practical ones, like a coffee gift voucher.”That said, some teachers noted on Reddit that “tat or homemade stuff ... goes straight in the bin”. Another added: “I’m surprised people don’t realise this. Imagine how many best teacher mugs you can get given over 5 years, easily fifty plus. Teachers don’t have a TARDIS for storing excess junk.”The Discounts for Teachers survey revealed just over one in 10 (12% of) teachers favour food or snacks as a gift, while 11% prefer self-care items. When asked whether they’d prefer a heartfelt card or a physical gift, most teachers agreed it’s the sentiment that counts. Over half said they’d rather receive a card with a personal message.Related...10 Ways Parents Aren t Doing Kids Any Favours , According To TeachersI Hated School – Then Teachers Made An Observation That Changed My LifeTeachers Are Revealing The Rudest Things Parents Have Ever Said To Them
