Rachel Reeves Says She Is Cracking On With The Job A Day After Crying In Commons

Rachel Reeves speaking to broadcasters today.Rachel Reeves has said she is “cracking on with the job” after the sight of her crying in the Commons led to speculation about her future. The chancellor admitted she was “clearly upset” during prime minister’s questions but would not be drawn on the cause of her distress. It later emerged that she had had a verbal altercation with Commons speaker Lindsay Hoyle as she arrived for PMQs.Keir Starmer, who has faced criticism for failing to console his cabinet colleague, insisted Reeves will remain chancellor “for a very long time”.Speaking to broadcasters after appearing alongside the PM at the launch of the government’s 10-year NHS strategy, the chancellor said: “Clearly I was upset yesterday and everyone could see that. It was a personal issue and I’m not going to go into the details of that.“My job as chancellor at 12 o’clock on a Wednesday is to be at PMQs next to the prime minister, supporting the government and that’s what I tried to do.“I guess the thing that maybe is a bit different between my job and many of your viewers’ is that when I’m having a tough day it’s on the telly and most people don’t have to deal with that.”She also rejected suggestions that her tears were related to her spat with Hoyle or with another member of government.“People saw I was upset, but that was yesterday. Today’s a new day and I’m just cracking on with the job,” she added.Related...Starmer And Reeves Put On Public Display Of Unity A Day After Chancellor s Commons TearsWes Streeting Says Rachel Reeves Is Here To Stay Amid Speculation Over Chancellor s FutureLindsay Hoyle Had Altercation With Rachel Reeves Before She Cried At PMQs
