Squid Game recently returned for its third season on NetflixWarning: This article contains major spoilers for the final season of Squid Game.If you’ve already binged Squid Game season three in its entirety, you’ll probably have been left with some pretty big questions about the future of the franchise. The final instalment in the South Korean dystopian survival thriller landed on Netflix one week ago, culminating in a bloody conclusion to the games, while leaving the door open for potential spin-offs.As you’ll (hopefully) know by now, the final moments gave us a thrilling cameo from two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who makes an appearance as a new Los Angeles-based Squid Game Recruiter. As we recover from the blood-pumping final episodes and Gi-hun’s shocking death, we’ve been left with plenty to speculate on when it comes to the future of the franchise. But the bad news is, if you weren’t already aware, this really is the end of the Squid Game series in its original form. Will there be a Squid Game season 4 on Netflix?Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year: “I believe I’ve had closure to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun.” He also spoke to Netflix’s Tudum about why he decided on protagonist Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) death – which he hadn’t initially planned for – realising that he “needed a resolution that would bring both the game and Gi-hun’s journey to a close”.Lee Jung-jae made his final appearance as Seong Gi-hun in the third season of NetflixAnd it seems he’s very much keeping true to his word by ending the South Korean megahit after just three seasons. But fear not, because it seems like there is a very real possibility of Squid Game spin-offs in the future.Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Dong-hyuk said he had been thinking about potential ideas that would explore the backstories of the various other characters.“If I ever wanted to go back to the world of Squid Game, it would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spin-off, maybe,” he shared.“For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe.”He also floated the idea of exploring the time gap between seasons one and two from the perspective of The Frontman and Recruiter. In a more recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he elaborated on those ideas further, insisting that “the story ended in a manner where it doesn’t need a further story to be told. So I am not too interested in telling a story that continues on from the conclusion”.He continued that, if he were to go with a spin-off, he’d “rather choose to go back and see what happened during that time gap”, adding that “this is something that we are just tossing around, so as for when or how a spin-off might come about, it’s still up in the air”.And what’s all this about an American remake of Squid Game?To throw even more speculation into the mix, this time last year reports emerged suggesting that Oscar-winning director David Fincher would be helming an English-language remake of Squid Game. While some speculated about whether Cate Blanchett’s cameo in the final episode of Squid Game could be opening the door to the US remake, undisclosed “sources” told The Hollywood Reporter that this cliffhanger was not intended to set up any future instalments “at this time”. Netflix has also remained tight-lipped about the rumours. Are there any other new shows from the Squid Game universe coming to Netflix in the future? If all that uncertainty is leaving you with a Squid Game-shaped hole in your life, we do know that a second season of the reality show Squid Game: The Challenge will be returning for a second season, with reports anticipating its return sometime in 2025.The first season aired on Netflix in 2023, with 456 people battling it out in physical and mental challenges inspired by the South Korean show in the hopes of securing a massive cash prize. All three seasons of Squid Game are now available to watch on Netflix.READ MORE:Squid Game Creator Makes Intriguing Elon Musk ComparisonLiam Payne’s Sister Shares Heartbreaking Reaction To Seeing His Final TV AppearanceThis New High-Stakes Netflix Thriller Is A Must-Watch For Line Of Duty Fans
