Critics Are Split On Whether The New Series Of The Witcher With Liam Hemsworth Is Pure Bilge Or Better Than Ever

Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher SE4When news broke that Henry Cavill was stepping down from his lead role as Geralt in The Witcher, fans were concerned about what it meant for the future of the show.Netflix announced that Liam Hemsworth would take over, donning the trademark icy blonde wig to take the fantasy drama forward for two more seasons in a move that divided fans given Henry’s popularity in the role. The fourth season of The Witcher has now landed, and it’s safe to say critics have mixed views on how it measures up, mainly revolving around whether or not Liam has pulled off the role. Here’s a round-up of what they had to say…The Guardian (2/5)“The replacement that Netflix has chosen for lead actor Henry Cavill is utterly lacking in his predecessor’s likability. The ex-Neighbours actor is a scowling lunk who brings a wildly uneven vibe to this fantasy drama [...] Alas, no amount of wounded grunting can detract from the fact that Hemsworth, bless his pleather britches, is no Henry Cavill.”Metro (3.5/5)“The way that they introduce Liam into the series is smart, bringing his version of Geralt into the fold through a romanticised retelling of their adventures in a storybook [...] I’m relieved to say that the Netflix series has pulled off the enormously difficult feat of replacing its lead character, as gutting as it was to see Henry leave [...]  If you’re a fan of The Witcher, if you enjoy fantasy, if you love losing yourself in other worlds, then season four should be right up your street.”The Independent (2/5)“Giving Hemsworth all the grace in the world for stepping into such a difficult role, it’s impossible to avoid feeling like this is a huge downgrade [...] This fourth chapter feels like a tick-box exercise, helping the show limp towards its conclusion. But the series’s fans must be frustrated by the way the product has degraded in the years since its promising debut in 2019. No amount of imaginative swordplay or inventive creature design can prevent the sense that The Witcher is now what all sword and sorcery epics fear becoming: pure bilge.”RadioTimes (2/5)“Overall, the fourth outing is unfortunately a frustrating and inconsistent entry, marked by a significant drop in quality. The shifting tone – paired with uneven performances and production elements – occasionally tips the series into melodrama [...] It was always going to be a bold move to recast Geralt, and unfortunately, it just doesn’t work. It’s incredibly jarring to see and hear Hemsworth as Geralt [...] It’s clear that Netflix’s flagship fantasy series has lost its magic.”GamesRadar (4/5)“It may not be what video game or book fans expected – and even with the improved quality, Cavill-heads will probably still riot – but it is the show we got. And thanks to a delightfully brisk slate of eight episodes that build as they go, full of laughs, huge action, and real danger for our main characters, The Witcher is better than ever – with a great setup that will make you want the final season to be released, right now.” Variety“In a much sharper and less convoluted season than the previous one, The Witcher Season 4 is action-packed and full of dazzling characters both old and new. It acts as a reset, ironing out the confusing conflicts and plot points that have long plagued the series [...] Overall, even as a brand-new lead takes the charge, The Witcher Season 4 has mostly reclaimed its magic.”The Witcher season 4 is streaming on Netflix.Related...‘The Witcher’ Reveals Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt, And People Have Mixed FeelingsMiley Cyrus Reveals How She Tried To Save Relationship With Liam HemsworthNetflix s Promo Stunt For The Witcher Season 3 Has Not Gone Down Well With Liam Hemsworth Fans
