Lewis Goodall and Priti Patel on LBC.A presenter on LBC clashed with Priti Patel after she defended Robert Jenrick for complaining about not seeing another “white face” during a 90-minute visit to Birmingham. The shadow justice secretary sparked a furious row when a leaked recording of his remarks to a Conservative Party dinner were revealed by The Guardian.Jenrick said: “I went to Handsworth in Birmingham the other day to do a video on litter and it was absolutely appalling. It’s as close as I’ve come to a slum in this country.“But the other thing I noticed there was that it was one of the worst integrated places I’ve ever been to. In fact, in the hour and a half I was filming news there I didn’t see another white face.”Although he was defended by Kemi Badenoch, shadow chancellor Mel Stride said “they are not words that I would have chosen”.On LBC on Sunday, shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel used her own personal experiences to back up Jenrick’s point. She said: “I’m British Asian. I grew up in a country where we integrated, we got on with our lives, we love our country. I’m an advocate for Britain at home and abroad.“I want to see people who come to our country behave and integrate in that way. So I think Robert was absolutely right to call out what he saw.”But presenter Lewis Goodall told her: “Going to somewhere for 90 minutes, not seeing any white faces, seeing lots of black and brown faces, and then declaring it to be a failure of integration is a bit problematic.“If Robert Jenrick had seen you or Kemi Badenoch in that area, he would have just assumed you were poorly integrated.”He added: “When he was wandering around Handsworth and saw some black and brown faces, he wouldn’t have known anything particularly about those people.“If he’d seen you, if he’d seen Kemi Badenoch walking down that street, he would just have said ‘well they’re not white, so they’re poorly integrated’. Isn’t that just a very simplistic, reductive view of integration?”Patel replied: “I’ll tell you why I disagree with that, because fundamentally politicians and everyone should be able to speak their minds freely and speak about what they see.”‘If he had seen you or Kemi Badenoch in that area, he would have assumed you were poorly integrated.’
‘No, I don’t think so.’
