(Photo by Evan Agostini/Invision/AP)Charlie Hunnam has opened up about his visit to Ed Gein’s grave after completing his work on the latest season of Monster. The former Sons Of Anarchy actor portrays Gein in the most recent iteration of Netflix’s true crime drama, which has already proved to be even more controversial than past seasons since it began streaming earlier this month.Last week, Charlie gave an interview where he revealed that he often struggles to let go of his characters once he’s done playing them, and visited the serial killer’s gravesite in what he described as the “most extreme decompression” of his career once filming on Monster was finished. He also opened up about this experience during a conversation with Monster creator Ryan Murphy for Interview magazine.“I was very afraid to let Ed into my psyche and into my heart in the way that I needed to, and I never gave myself a window to step outside of the reality that we created,” he explained.“My partner is incredibly kind to me and generous with my process and allows me to sneak out the back window and come back when the job’s over. Many years ago she said, ‘Don’t come home until you’re ready to see me’. And so I needed a couple of days in order to shake it off and be fully available to her. But I also needed to say goodbye to Ed.“So I drove to Plainfield and spent five or six hours at his grave and walking around the town. I wanted to express one thing specifically to him, that I hope that we had for the first time told his story in an honest and unbiased way.”Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein in a promo image for the new season of MonsterHe continued: “It’s an eerie place to be, because it’s not only where Ed was buried, but it’s also the site of the vast majority of his grave robbings. So it’s very complex for the residents, too.“I imagine that [it] must have been very controversial to allow him to be laid to rest in the area [where] he had exhumed so many graves.”Asked by the TV super-producer if Charlie felt Gein’s “presence” in the graveyard, the actor responded: “Very much. I cried a little bit. I talked to him a lot. I felt like I needed to say everything that I needed to say.“I think we’ve done a beautiful job of humanising him for good and bad. There’s a lot of reasons to feel empathetic towards Ed. And there’s a lot of reasons to be repulsed and to hold him accountable for what he did.”Charlie Hunnam and Ryan Murphy at the premiere of Monster season threeCharlie previously described the visit as a “healing way” to “say goodbye and put a full stop at the end of the thing”.Over the last two weeks, Charlie has repeatedly defended Monster from critics, most notably those who’ve accused the show of “sensationalising” Gein’s horrific crimes.Related...9 Roles You d Probably Forgotten Charlie Hunnam Once Played Before MonsterThought The Stars Of Monster Season 3 Looked Familiar?
